Scholz Garten and Texas Trivia
1. Scholz Garten is the oldest continually operating business in Texas. 140 years old!
2. Molly Ivins dressed up as a waitress to eavesdrop (unsuccessfully by the way) on Bill Clinton and his staffers during his swing through Texas in 1991.
3. A legendary politician was trapped in Scholz's old phone booth and set off the burglar alarms when he finally stepped out. Scholz's had closed, and this happened during the Queen's visit. The alarms (two blocks from her limo) drew swat teams and the Secret Service from all over town. The politician walked out of Scholz's to the force of 60 armed police, F. B. I., Secret Service, and the news media filmed the whole thing. For some reason it never made the evening news or the papers. Guess Who?
4. Edmund Jackson Davis (1827-1883), a "radical republican", refused to leave the capitol after he lost an election to Richard Coke. Known as the "Coke-Davis" incident it officialy ended reconsruction in Texas. For about 100 days Texas had two legislatures, and two cabinets on the first and second floors of the capitol. Davis asked President Grant to guard the capitol against those Democrats who won the election. Grant basically said "No, you lost the election!"
5. Falstaff Beer once owned Scholz Garten and brewed "The Beer that Milwalkee Famous" at Scholz's.
6. George Custer was stationed two blocks from Scholz's after the Civil War.
7. After the US Congress passed the 14th amendment the Texas Legislature rejected it. (1866)
8. The University of Texas maintained a dating service during WWII.
9. The first powered airplane was flown by Jacob Brodbeck, a German immigrant. 40 years before The Wright Brothers.
