Larry Hovis Remembered by Tom Davis
Larry Hovis, who passed away in 2003, was my older brother. He will always be remembered by many fans for his TV role as Sgt. Carter on Hogan's Heroes. I remember him as a funny and talented older brother who never finished college, but ended up teaching at one. Larry moved back to Texas in the 90's and taught acting and writing at Texas State. These pictures and pages are mine and others memories of him. Larry thought it was ironic that he portrayed an American prisoner of war in Germany, and his brother, me, ran a German resturant in Texas. He really loved the irony. Quite a number of the other actors on the TV program were actually either prisoners of war or had joined the US Armed Forces during World War II. John Banner, Sergant Schultz, had to flee Austria after the 1938 union between Germany and Austria. Robert Clary, LeBeau, still carries a number or tattoo on his arm from being held in a Nazi concentration camp. Werner Klemperer was a member of the U.S. Armed Forces in WWII. He was also a member of a family that fled the Nazi cleansing in the 1930's.
Larry was a pretty good singer and I am including a mp3 of one of Larry's songs from his Capitol Records' days. This a link: A short movie (wmv) of Larry, some of his friends and his family. Larry is singing "Love is Funny" in the background.

I met all of the actors when the series was in production and they were characters in real life, too. Seeing them again on the DVD extras brought back memories of being on the set.
